Meet the artist from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 3. James, based on Hornby Island, British Columbia has created a body of paintings that represent a new direction for the artist's work. She says, "There is a fascination for me in the process of making this work, and a challenge for the viewer, to simply be with what is before you without asking anything from it; to allow the work to give you what is has and to simply show your own reaction to being there, quietly. Meet the artists and enjoy the finest photographic work on Orcas Island. Arthur, The Begetting onstage at the GrangeFive performances of Arthur, The Begetting by Seattle playwright and actor, Jeff Berryman begin Friday, September 3 at the Grange on Orcas Island. The Actors Theater of Orcas Island presents this powerful play which is the first in a series of plays retelling the story of King Arthur.The cast includes Valerie Buxbaum, Zack Knight, Indy Zoeller, Evan Buxbaum, Freddy Hinkle, and Ariel Vergen. Doug Bechtel directs. Performances: all at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4; Friday, Sept. 10, Saturday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12. at the Grange. Due to some minor violence and mild sexual references this play may not be suitable for very young children. Journey Stories, a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit in Eastsound opens July 17posted 06/10/2010 Being chosen to host this exhibit gave the museum the opportunity to create their own local exhibition, consisting of a showcase video of local resident stories (old and new). The video, part of an Orcas Island High School student project with teacher Paul Evans, will be shown throughout the exhibit. It will become an ongoing display at the museum. Also on display will be a hard copy book of other local Journey Stories. A beautiful quilt created by islander quilters featuring island boats of our past is part of the exhibit and will be raffled off on closing day. The story of the ancient bison remains found on the island, which will soon to be on display, will be told. Visitors Can have a "Passport Book" stamped as they move the museum to other historical places on the island such as Robert Moran's Rosario Resort, Doe Bay Resort and Crow Valley Museum during this event. Journey Stories is part of Museum on Main Street (MOM), a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Nederland Colorado neo-acoustic quintet Elephant Revival plays a unique blend of an emerging new musical genre called Transcendental Folk. The quintet can be seen delving into Scottish/Celtic fiddle tunes, original folk pieces, traditional ballads, psychedelic country, indie rock, powerful reggae grooves, 40s/50s jazz standards and an occasional hip-hop beat amongst other styles. The band consists of Bonnie Paine (vocals, washboard, djembe, musical saw), Sage Cook (electric banjo/guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, viola, vocals), Dango Rose (double-bass, mandolin, banjo, vocals), Daniel Rodriguez (acoustic guitar, electric banjo/guitar vocals) and Bridget Law (fiddle and vocals).
