Rande and Fran, both Kwaguilth Native artists from Vancouver Island, envision a casual, fun afternoon discussion. Cook, a painter, sculptor and hereditary chief said, their presentation will strive to “connect all the fundamentals of our Native culture today, talk about the history of where we come from and the affects of being an urbanized Indian.”

Painter, print-maker and lecturer, Francis Dick, related, “Before anything else my work is about honoring my life process, my journey …to places that I might stand in my truth: my work is not a career, it is a way of life.” Since childhood Fran has been compelled to share her path through singing and art.

SJCT receives $60K Challenge Grant

The San Juan Community Theatre is receiving a boost in efforts to maintain its 20-year-old facility.

The Confidence Foundation of Southern California has awarded the Theatre a $60,000 challenge grant to aid in repairs to its roof and replacement of an exterior wall.

"This is an amazing opportunity for us and we are very grateful to the Foundation," said SJCT Executive Director Merritt Olsen. "We can now move forward to make sure we have a sound roof over our heads for the next 20 years!"

The Confidence Foundation has been a long-time supporter of the Theatre, including providing a major matching grant in 1985 to jumpstart the building of the Theatre and most recently, financially supporting the building of the Theatre's rehearsal and workshop facility, PARC.

In order to use the Confidence Foundation funds, the Theatre will need to seek $60,000 in matching funds from community members. "We are very hopeful our community will follow through and help us ensure their Theatre continues to thrive," said Olsen.

For more information on these Theatre efforts, contact Merritt Olsen at 378-3211, ext. 29.

Shark Reef spring issue is online

"Idle observations at a ferry landing; thoughts that surface when we try to sleep; a young woman's unhappy visit to a radiologist's office; the sensation of floating after a strong dive; a hilarious tale of chickens as weapons; and the musings of a self-described middle-aged woman in the throes of a new love affair – with Montana and fly fishing..."

Orcas Island's Jill McCabe Johnson, executive director of Artsmith -- a non-profit to support the arts – is describing some of the work featured in the spring 2009 issue of Shark Reef, an online literary magazine publishing the writing and art of San Juan Islands residents and visitors. "These stories and poems bring welcome light after the long winter," she says. MORE INFORMATION

Local Art Notes

Why Art?

By Ruth Offen

posted 12/12/2008
In these deep dark days [both daylight wise and economically] art is more of a necessity than ever. The color, the texture and the emotional connection brings a ray of light into our worlds.

I have noticed over the years how people visiting my gallery, look upon the gallery experience as a source of nourishment and sustenance for their souls.

With this notion in mind, I recently walked through the galleries in Friday Harbor. My experience was an amazing diversity of context and content exists in this local art community of galleries. COLUMN
