Special Exhibition: Caroline James Abstract Paintings

September 3 - 14

image: Genuflect, fabric collage and paint 36 x 48

A special exhibition of recent paintings by Caroline James is on exhibit at Waterworks gallery in Friday Harbor from September 3-14. Meet the artist from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 3. James, based on Hornby Island, British Columbia has created a body of paintings that represent a new direction for the artist's work.

She says, "There is a fascination for me in the process of making this work, and a challenge for the viewer, to simply be with what is before you without asking anything from it; to allow the work to give you what is has and to simply show your own reaction to being there, quietly. Try not thinking!"

Journey Stories, a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit in Eastsound opens July 17

posted 06/10/2010
Orcas Island Historical Museum, located on Main Street in Eastsound, has been chosen to host Journey Stories, a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit from July 17 to August 29, 2010.

Being chosen to host this exhibit gave the museum the opportunity to create their own local exhibition, consisting of a showcase video of local resident stories (old and new). The video, part of an Orcas Island High School student project with teacher Paul Evans, will be shown throughout the exhibit. It will become an ongoing display at the museum.

Also on display will be a hard copy book of other local Journey Stories. A beautiful quilt created by islander quilters featuring island boats of our past is part of the exhibit and will be raffled off on closing day. The story of the ancient bison remains found on the island, which will soon to be on display, will be told. Visitors Can have a "Passport Book" stamped as they move the museum to other historical places on the island such as Robert Moran's Rosario Resort, Doe Bay Resort and Crow Valley Museum during this event.

Journey Stories is part of Museum on Main Street (MOM), a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.

SJCT receives
$60K Challenge Grant

The San Juan Community Theatre is receiving a boost in efforts to maintain its 20-year-old facility.

The Confidence Foundation of Southern California has awarded the Theatre a $60,000 challenge grant to aid in repairs to its roof and replacement of an exterior wall.

"This is an amazing opportunity for us and we are very grateful to the Foundation," said SJCT Executive Director Merritt Olsen. "We can now move forward to make sure we have a sound roof over our heads for the next 20 years!"

The Confidence Foundation has been a long-time supporter of the Theatre, including providing a major matching grant in 1985 to jumpstart the building of the Theatre and most recently, financially supporting the building of the Theatre's rehearsal and workshop facility, PARC.

In order to use the Confidence Foundation funds, the Theatre will need to seek $60,000 in matching funds from community members. "We are very hopeful our community will follow through and help us ensure their Theatre continues to thrive," said Olsen.

For more information on these Theatre efforts, contact Merritt Olsen at 378-3211, ext. 29.
