Espresso, wi-fi available at Pelindaba Downtown
posted 11/26/04 Stephen Robins, co-owner of Pelindaba Lavender, said, "Adding espresso also calls for us to open earlier to accommodate the "can't-get-started-without-coffee" crowd, so we'll be opening at 7am." As of November 26, Pelindaba Downtown's regular hours will be 7am to 9pm, seven days a week. Pelindaba chefs have also added a range of non-lavender baked goods to complement their popular lavender-based offerings. In addition, savory items will shortly be available as light luncheon fare.
Pelindaba Downtown has rapidly become a favorite Friday Harbor gathering place. The "Evenings at Pelindaba" program put in place a month ago has been a great success. A mixture of literary events, public issues discussions, and theatrical performances have been attracting crowds of enthusiastic guests. The availability of WiFi has also drawn those who need a comfortable place to check their email while sipping teas and coffees and eating farm-fresh baked goods. The setting will encourage people to linger over their refreshments. It includes an indoor area with café tables and chairs, a fireplace surrounded by comfortable chairs, and an outdoor area resembling the sidewalk cafes of Europe. All of the baked goods served will incorporate Pelindaba's organically certified culinary lavender and will be delivered daily from the farm's new Certified Kitchen and Bakery just a few minutes away. According to Susan and Stephen Robins, Pelindaba's owners, there were twin motivations for opening a downtown store. First was the observation there are many people who visit the island who don't have the time to tour the island or may be visiting when San Juan Transit is no longer running, and would ask about a downtown outlet for Pelindaba products. "In this regard, a town location will offer an entirely new group of visitors who may not easily get to the farm a chance to see our products and try our delicious treats. It also offers our fellow islanders, especially those living in town, a more convenient venue than the farm, particularly in winter." The Gatehouse Store at the farm will now close in the winter months, whereas Pelindaba Downtown will be open year-round with hours extending into the evening. The sizable space also invited the idea of offering a place where people can meet, relax, talk, or read in comfortable surroundings, with quality refreshments right at hand while doing so. The Robins' have further teamed the meaning of the name "Pelindaba" ("Place of Great Gatherings" in the Zulu language), with their pioneering use of lavender in a wide variety of foods and drinks. "We believe this is the only establishment offering almost exclusively lavender-based food and drinks anywhere in the country," said Susan Robins, "but we like leading trends." Pelindaba's culinary products have been featured on 'The Today Show' and many have earned a place on the menus of celebrity chefs. Pelindaba Downtown is located at 150 First Street. Store hours will be 9am-9pm. Call 378-4248 for further information, or go to Pelindaba's web site, www.pelindaba.com. |
