Greetings! My name is Daven (pronounced Day-ven, like Raven with a D), and I'm moving to SJI from Southeast Alaska this April. I'm beginning the search for housing now, as I've heard repeatedly that it's quite the challenge. A little bit about me: I'm a 34 year old male who loves reading, carpentry, running, and growing my own vegetables. I hold my 100 Ton captain's license (which means I'm drug free :)) and will be working from April through October as a captain for a local company. I'm fairly handy and neat, and very aware and respectful of other people's property and space. I'm a total introvert, so a big party night for me might be having a beer a couple friends, playing some old Junior Kimbrough records, and playing horseshoes.
A little bit more about me to give you a sense of who I am: I don't smoke, but I do drink coffee. Some of my favorite authors are David Mitchell, Kurt Vonnegut, Maya Angelou, and a few dozen others. I played baseball in college and formerly ran a nonprofit in Alaska whose focus is wild Pacific salmon conservation. Oh, and I've worked for the past three years as a small boat operator in Antarctica, Arctic Norway, Greenland, and Arctic Canada. I've also fished commercially in Bristol Bay.
I'm looking to travel less (done a LOT of it lately) and put down some long term roots. Although I love Alaska and will always hold it close to my heart, SJI looks like the place for me in terms of roots. I'm looking for a long term rental initially, and ultimately hope to buy or build my own place should things work out well on that front. I'll be on SJI by early April and would be comfortable with a year lease. Security deposits, first and last, all that is definitely okay by me as well.
Lastly, and most importantly: I have a middle aged black lab (6 years old) who is likely the sweetest dog on planet earth. He's very calm and quiet (not all black labs are), he doesn't bite or chew or have accidents in the house. His only downfall is he hasn't quite yet learned that porcupines are bad news... His running total to date is 4.
I am leaving for Antarctica today, and will be there for the next two months. Amazingly, I will have access to my email address on a daily basis, but not the wider internet at large.
