THURSDAY

Ingrid is currently living and respectably employed in Austin, Texas with a firm specializing in environmental law. She hopes to get back home to the San Juan Islands next spring to stay.

While Ingrid is spiritually promiscuous, she credits her guru, Jimmy Buffet, for her mantra..."If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane." Besides a passion for Tiki Studies, Ingrid is borderline biblio-obsessive. She is an old-school Libran - i.e., she won't be leading the Revolution, but she'll work to make it an attractive affair and hire the musicians and caterers."

Her column appears every other Thursday in San Juan Islander. To contact Ingrid, send emails to ingrid@sanjuanislander.com

My name is Jim Carroll. When we moved here, we found out you already had one of those! So I am going by James Shuman Carroll, (hence the use of my nickname "Shu"). It is also my "playa name" if that phrase holds meaning for you. I am a retired career firefighter and a northwest native, born in the K-Mart in Renton. Well, that's what's there now. Hollie (she's "Lala") and I have two vehicles named "Shulala" - a bright red '71 VW bus you may see around town, and a 26' Nordic Tug. This is my first effort at a regular writing gig (though I have tortured friends and family with opinion pieces and stories for decades). I am happy and honored to share the Thursday spot with Ingrid and sincerely appreciate the time you have taken to read some of my stuff.

Comments can be sent to Jim at shu@sanjuanislander.com.

FRIDAY

Each Friday, Chief Jim Cole from San Juan Island EMS will be writing an article on an important health and safety topic affecting our community. Prior to coming to San Juan, he was the Director of the School of EMS for the Cleveland Clinic Health System. Suggestions for future topics can be sent to jimcole@sanjuanislander.com.

COLUMNISTS

Susan Vernon is a writer and naturalist who lives on San Juan Island.

Matt Pranger, writes occasionally about island life.

The Old Squid rides a motorcyle and shares his observations.

Mike Kaill is a local resident of eighteen years. He retired as a biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, prior to which he was a professor at the University of the Pacific.

Information, like the ocean surface, seems to be a barrier to understanding and action. Kaill is trying to penetrate that barrier by providing some insight to the public. He operates the Port of Friday Harbor’s Aquarium at Spring Street. He is also a diver, boater, and photographer. He sees his favorite place being compromised, sold off, and over-used. He's hoping these columns will help concerned citizens appreciate what is happening, and lead to good management. He can be reached at mike@sanjuanislander.com

Greg Hertel writes about topics of general interest.
