Besides a passion for Tiki Studies, Ingrid is borderline biblio-obsessive. She is an old-school Libran - i.e., she won't be leading the Revolution, but she'll work to make it an attractive affair and hire the musicians and caterers." Her column appears every other Thursday in San Juan Islander. To contact Ingrid, send emails to ingrid@sanjuanislander.com My name is James Shuman Carroll, and my nickname is "Shu". (It is also my "playa name" if that phrase holds meaning for you). I am a retired career firefighter and a NW native, born and raised in the Puget Sound area. My wife Hollie (she's "Lala") is also a NW native and former career firefighter. We are enjoying life as island caretakers on Brown Island. This is my first effort at a regular writing gig. He retired as a biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, prior to which he was a professor at the University of the Pacific. He operates the Port of Friday Harbor's Aquarium at Spring Street. He is also a diver, boater, and photographer. He sees his favorite place being compromised, sold off, and over-used. He's hoping these columns will help concerned citizens appreciate what is happening, and lead to good management.
