COLD LASER THERAPY

posted 09/15/2008
So just what are cold or low level lasers? A laser is basically a focused beam of light that emits photon energy. When light is focused properly, all the photons are traveling in the same direction and at the same wavelength. Laser actually stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Luckily, the radiation produced by lasers is not only harmless but has been found to speed healing of tissues by as much as 40% faster than normally expected.

Lasers have been around for a long time and in fact were first postulated by Albert Einstien. We now have two different types of lasers being produced for health care practitioners. The first is called a “hot laser”. These lasers put out energy at a very high rate and can cut through tissue and are used for surgery. They work well because they do a minimum of damage to the tissue while being very specific. Cold lasers have no thermal effect on tissue and are used to stimulate, rather than destroy tissue.

The laser we use in our office is manufactured by ERCHONIA MEDICAL, and is the first laser approved by the FDA. The research done for our laser was done for chronic neck and shoulder pain.

Lasers have been shown to have what is called a bio-modulating effect on tissue. This means if pain is due to too little energy it stimulates energy production and if pain is due to too much energy it dissipates energy. This is what makes lasers so efficient in speeding healing.

In our office we have used lasers to help heal sprains and strains but also have found great results with carpal tunnel syndrome, temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) issues, sciatica and numbness and tingling due to nerve pressure. Lasers can also be a great adjunct in treating other neurological issues such as ADD, MS, Parkinson’s Disease and vertigo. Other research shows they can stimulate fractures to heal more completely and faster as well.

I believe as technology continues to improve, we will see most of having lasers in our homes as part of our first aid kit. They are now doing research with lasers on burn victims with wonderful results as well as with scrapes and bruises.

If you want more information on lasers, you go to erchonia.com, google cold lasers or go to our website at sanjuanholistichealthcare.com. You can also call us at 360-378-5660 for more information.
