STRUCTURAL IMBALANCE

posted 07/14/2008
Of the six interferences to health (structure, electromagnetic, nutrition, allergies/sensitivities, emotions and toxins) structural imbalances are the foundation in any chiropractors office. The same is true in our office. These imbalances are called "subluxations."

A subluxation occurs when a vertebra (or any other joint in the body) gets out of alignment or just doesn't move properly. When this happens nerve flow can be altered. Nerve flow can be increased as it is when we injure ourselves and we get muscle spasms and sharp pain. Part of this subluxation is the inflammation that occurs due to the injury. Swelling surrounds the joints in the spine and increases the pressure on the nerve exiting from the opening between the vertebrae increasing pain.

That's why icing your back after an injury is so important in helping reduce the pain and speed healing. People seem to understand they need to ice a sprained ankle but at the same time will put heat on their back after an injury. Heat may feel good while you have it on but it creates more inflammation which increases pain and slows healing. So remember, always ice any part of your body after an injury.

When we have a chronic subluxation that may be due to old injuries that never got corrected, or just day to day life dealing with gravity we may not even have any pain. Indicators of these are getting out of bed in the morning and just being stiff. You stretch and feel better but tomorrow you feel stiff again.

These are more insidious and detrimental to our health. Over time these subluxations lead to chronic irritation of the nerves and degeneration. As we explain to our patients, the laws of gravity and physics applies to us as well as to your car. If the front end of your car is out of alignment your tires wear out faster, and so it is with you, if you are out of alignment your wear out faster too.

In one study done by Henry Windsor, M.D., of 50 cadavers with disease in 139 organs, there was found curve of the vertebrae (subluxation), belonging to the primary nerve supply to the diseased organ 128 times. In 10 other instances the subluxation was in the vertebrae next to the primary nerve supply which also served that organ.

So no wonder your chiropractor thinks it is important to have regular spinal checkups. These checkups have nothing to do with acute pain but rather with dis-ease prevention. If have a chiropractor you haven't seen for awhile, call them and make an appointment. If you resemble the person with chronic, low grade discomfort, and have never been to a chiropractor, call one soon. We are lucky on San Juan Island to have four highly qualified chiropractors to choose from.
