What Should I Read Next?
Do you remember that bulletin board in the library with those tacked up index cards and patron book recommendations? It was on the end of the new book shelf as you came in the library. Sometimes it looked a little messy, but if you stopped and looked you could always find an interesting recommendation. Most days someone would add a new recommendation to the board so it was fresh and lively. That board was something that got lost in the remodel, but it’s back! You won’t see our new Reader Recommendations board as you walk in the front door as it is on the side of the new fiction cart facing the new non-fiction books. And you won’t see index cards because we are using sticky notes instead (how did we ever live without sticky notes?). But otherwise it’s just the same and waiting for your recommendations. We hope you will start using this again as a way to share your finds with others and as a source for that next great read. We have a similar board in the teen area with teen book recommendations. Although I am no longer the youth services librarian I still find myself wandering over there to pick out a teen book from time to time. I have found you’re never too old to appreciate a little angst or to take a break from more serious reading. Other sources for book recommendations in the library include the New York Times Book Review located with the newspapers and our free copies of Book Page with a monthly selection of book reviews. We have reader’s advisory books in our collection such as Nancy Pearl’s Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason. We can connect you with lists such as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Awards. From our catalog you can view lists of new books to the library and the New York Times bestsellers. There is also the Literary Salon program on the third Thursday of the month where you will be sure to walk away with a list of ‘must reads.’ And importantly we are here to help; we love to try and fit the right book to the right person. We’ll ask you a few questions such as what type of books you like: mysteries, contemporary fiction, memoirs, travel, or true crime. Do you have a favorite author? What are some titles that you really loved? Or if you can’t think of anything you have ever liked (this happens more frequently with kids than adults) what books you didn’t like and why not. So if you are stumped when trying to find that next book or just want something you might not find on your own, come into the library! A couple books I recommend are:
