And the Winner Is...Most everyone knows about the recent 2007 Academy Awards and how this annual event recognizes excellence in the film industry. But did you know each year the Librarian of Congress, with advice from the National Film Preservation Board, names 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry? Did you know we had a National Film Registry? As part of the National Film Preservation Act, these film selections are made to preserve our nation’s film heritage. To be considered for an annual list the films must be at least 10 years old and be "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." Currently there are 475 motion pictures in the registry. "Few are aware that up to half the films produced in this country before 1950—and as much as 90 percent of those made before 1920—are lost forever," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "The National Film Registry seeks not only to honor these films, but to ensure that they are preserved for future generations to enjoy." For each title selected for the registry, the Library of Congress works to preserve the film either through their motion-picture preservation program or through collaborative ventures with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers. I pay attention to awards and recognitions such as these to help guide my DVD purchases. We have a limited budget for video and this is one way I can ensure we have a relevant collection. Accordingly we’ve recently ordered a few more Academy Award winners as well as selections from the National Film Registry. We certainly don’t have all the films on the lists, but we have a number of them. We always welcome special requests for ones we don’t have. So check out a movie below and enjoy a piece of America’s movie heritage. Films selected for the 2007 National Film Registry:
