Catch the Reading Bug!

The seniors have graduated, school is almost out, and our refreshing cold, rainy June weather is upon us. What that means to us here at the library is Summer Reading!! Starting this Friday kids, teens, and adults can begin their summer reading adventure at the library!

We are always proud to offer this program. In fact I believe summer reading programs are one of the most significant things public libraries provide their communities. Besides being a lot of fun, it's an important way for kids to maintain reading skills during the summer off from school, develop a reading-habit, and experience the joy of reading for personal pleasure.

Study after study show that kids who don't read during the summer may actually lose reading and learning skills and come back to school less prepared to enter the next grade level. It has further been shown summer learning losses may accumulate over years and contribute to the achievement gap.

The overall design of the program is similar to years past. Kids are asked to read a certain amount of time during the summer by keeping a log of the time and books read. Along the way they earn prizes and enjoy great entertainment including magic, music, and of course Bugs! Please note this year all children's programs will be held at the elementary school due to Guard Street construction and the resulting impact on parking and noise.

Innovations this year include:

  • Teens will earn iTunes gift cards

  • Both kids and teens who reach their reading goal will be entered into a drawing for a special prize bag full of books, summer reading gear, and more!

  • You can blog about all the great books you read this summer. Go to: blogs.sjlib.org/summerreading/ and share your summer picks!

And like last year we have a summer reading for adults, too! We've changed how it works a little from last year making it simple and fun. It works like this: for every book you read starting this Friday stop by and fill out a slip of paper with your name, phone number, and the title of the book you read.

The slip will go in a jar located on the display table in front of the Quiet Room. Each week we will draw two names, one will win a free hardback and one will win a free paperback book from the Friends of the Library Treasure Cove. And then at the end of the summer we will draw from all the entries for a chance to win a gift certificate from Market Chef. See what I said, simple and fun!

While you are in taking care of summer reading, don't forget to check out our annual book mark contest entries displayed in the children's area. This year kids designed bookmarks illustrating our buggy theme and they are all great! It was difficult, but we managed to select six as official library bookmarks. Be sure to collect all six!

As always thanks go to Friends of the Library for sponsoring Summer Reading!
