Art at the Library
If you have come in the library this week you may have noticed a new exhibit of great photographs from the San Juan County Land Bank. These photographs come to us after having recently been on display in the County Legislative Building and show special places that have been preserved by the Land Bank. They are in four separate areas highlighting a variety of unique spots throughout the county. Besides the fact that these are beautiful photographs and we are proud to have them displayed in the library, I mention this because it points to a part of the library that has been missing since the remodel in 2005. That part is the Art Committee. This group has worked at the library behind the scenes since 1994 putting together community art shows in the library. When I was here before they would do six shows a year typically around a specific theme. I was always amazed at how they come in on a Saturday morning and transform the library in a matter of a short couple of hours. One of the best things about the art exhibits in the library was that they provided an opportunity for the community to view art primarily by local artists. And it gave beginning artists a place to show their work and see how it feels to exhibit. In a past column Lauren wrote that she personally found hanging one picture a challenge, and I can whole heartedly agree with that. I only have a couple of things on the walls at my house mostly because I just don't like hanging pictures. I don't even know why I don't exactly. It's just a chore for me. To hang the whole library is a bit of a nightmare come true for me. So you can believe me when I say, I miss the Art Committee. We are looking for three to five people to plan art exhibits in the library as well as oversee the permanent collection of the library. If you would like to be a part of this, please let me know!
