Help Tell Our Story

About three weeks ago we set up at the High School Library to scan items from community members that tell the story of life on San Juan Island. We scanned over 75 images to be part of our online collection. It was an exciting day of unexpected treasures.

We had a lot of great photographs and postcards including shots of old houses, streets, families and individuals. We had bills of sale, an election poll book, and a marriage certificate. Other items included:

  • Coast Salish canoe paddle

  • 1942 Friday Harbor High School letterman’s sweater

  • Paintings done of our island from 1895-1912

  • Ornament made of wood from the old High School gymnasium floor

  • 1916 Calendar from Friday Harbor Drug

Already we can see how important this project is for preserving our local history and strengthening our community. We saw photographs and heard stories that hadn’t been shared with the community as a whole before. The willingness of islanders to share a piece of their lives with all of us is remarkable. All the people volunteering that day felt a true sense of privilege and honor to be entrusted with this work.

And this Saturday March 21 from 10-2 at the High School Library is our second community event day. We are hoping folks will bring in more valuable and unique items in to scan. As before no one will give up ownership of their items for this collection. We ask you questions about your item, scan it on the spot, and send you home with it.

Volunteers will staff two scanners for regular sized items and photographer Anne Sheridan will be there to take care of large format photographs and documents as well as actual physical objects. We will also have an audio recorder there to capture the story behind the items.

You can make an appointment in advance or just show up on Saturday. To make an appointment call the Historical Museum at 378-3949 or email at museum_admin@sjmuseum.org. Please call either the Library or the Historical Museum if you have any questions!

This grant was awarded by the Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library Division, funded by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
