Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?
posted 04/08/2009
National Poetry Month started in 1996 when the Academy of American Poets sought to widen the attention of all to the art of poetry. Since then it has grown to where libraries, booksellers, schools, and other organizations across the nation all take the month of April to teach and program around poetry. We try and do something every year here at the library and use it as an opportunity to think outside the iambic pentameter (yes, I stole that one) and promote the reading and writing of poetry. Here at the Library we kicked off the month with a poetry workshop and reading last Friday with Poet Paul Nelson. But if you missed that don't worry, there are still plenty of other ways to celebrate and explore poetry. One of the easiest ways is to have us lead you to the poetry section of our nonfiction shelves and simply check out a book of poetry. If you want to do more than that check out 30 great ideas from the folks at Academy of American Poets: www.poets.org/page.php/prmID/94 or sign up to have a Poem-A-Day emailed to you at: www.poets.org/poemADay.php And for more poetic fun, there is also the second annual Poem In Your Pocket Day on April 30. "The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, and friends on April 30." I've started to look for my perfect pocket poem already. Be sure to ask me on April 30th what I come up with!
