Celebrating People in Action

posted 04/22/2009
This is the final in what has become my unofficial, or at least unintentional, three part series of national celebrations. This week it's National Volunteer Week! The theme "Celebrating People in Action”" captures the meaning behind this week – honoring the people who dedicate themselves to taking action in their communities. And in our community, and specifically our library, this is too important of a celebration to let pass by unrecognized.

Special recognition this year goes to the following library volunteers for their consecutive years of service:

  • Edie deChadenedes - 20 years

  • Kathy Moss – 10 years

  • Marilyn Dayton – 5 years

  • Susan Hendrix – 5 years

  • Midge Paterson – 5 years

  • Janet Wright – 5 years

  • Penny Brown – 5 years

Don't let those 'few' anniversaries fool you. We currently have well over 100 volunteers on our roster here at the library. This number swelled this past year with the addition of our new volunteer program we are calling Tend-A-Shelf. This new program allows for a person come in on their own schedule and tidy, straighten, shift, and reshelf mishelved items in their own section of the library. This has already made a difference in how our shelves look, and in how easily patrons can find what they are looking for.

In addition to that, we have volunteers who do a long list of important jobs here. Probably the most visible job is checking materials in and out and then shelving them. We also have volunteers who get our magazines and books ready to check out, mend damaged items, sort and organize donations, take away our cardboard to be recycled, read to our children and seniors, and offer fun and instructive programs. And don't forget that our Friends of the Library Board and Board of Trustees are all volunteers as well. I feel humbled by what our volunteers do for this library every single day. We truly would not be the library we are without our volunteers and their work.

Please be sure to take a moment to thank our wonderful volunteers the next time you stop by the library! For more information about becoming a library volunteer contact Diana Warner, Volunteer Coordinator, by phone at 378-2798 or email at dwarner@sjlib.org.
