Leaving the Board
posted 05/20/2009
This person is Tom Metke. Over the past 12 years Tom has shared his professional expertise as well as his personal integrity with the library. He has a natural way of approaching situations from multiple points of view that always leads to better decision making. We are losing someone who obviously has a lot of institutional knowledge, but someone who also has a level headedness that I found distinct. After “retiring” in January of 2008 from 30 years with MPD Engineering and Surveying, Tom is now ready to really retire. He plans to do a lot of traveling this year with his wife and enjoy the wonderful luxury of time. He realized with all he wanted to do this year, he simply could not fulfill his duties as Library Trustee. This also means are currently looking to fill his position. As stated in previous columns library trustees are responsible for overseeing the operation of the library and planning for the future. This primarily involves establishing policy, setting the budget, hiring and evaluating the director, and advocating at large for the library. Potential candidates are encouraged to attend the board meeting on Tuesday, June 9th at 6:00 pm at the library. Applicants should send a letter of interest, along with a resume or list of qualifications, to: Laura Tretter, Library Director, San Juan Island Library, 1010 Guard St., Friday Harbor, WA 98250. All applications must be received by Friday, June 5th. The appointed trustee will complete the remainder Tom’s term, from July, 2009 through December, 2011. The appointment is made by the San Juan County Council. For more information, please contact me at 378-2798 or ltretter@sjlib.org. Please join us all in thanking Tom for his years of dedicated service to the Library.
