Here come the kids...and hopefully a few adults too!

posted 05/27/2009
Of course I have to begin with this headliner given what excitedly is just around the corner for the kids at their public library. As June approaches and we (not just I, for it takes an entire staff) prepare for our summer activities, there is a flurry of details to attend to in order to make our reading program this summer the best ever.

Although the library's Summer Reading Program is touted for kids, preschool through teens, and indeed they are our primary focus, given the activities and performers we have been fortunate to engage this summer, adults would be remiss not to attend, participate, and probably enjoy. Our theme this year is be creative@the library and we will be! Just a sampling might serve to entice:

We have to begin with one of the island s own: Maggie Gallivan, singer and musician, who will energize listeners. Our hat-decoration activity after her performance will get the kids ready to be part of the 4th of July parade. Of course, what summer would be complete without the Bubbleman, who blows anyone s imagination. Mad Science will offer up magic tricks and illusions. And the noiseguy, Charlie Williams, will be teaching us sounds that will make an audience smile. For the teens, they will be asked to Express Yourself with duct tape mania making flowers to clothes, experience twilight tales from a master storyteller, and adorn their bodies with henna paints designed to show off their inner self. (That s not all; space doesn t allow for a complete list of all 12 programs.)

And, if all this wasn t enough, we will be giving away books to those kids who complete the reading aspect of the program. Drawings from those finishing will also take place during the grand finale in August to determine grand prizes winners of either a digital camera or Flip digital video camera.

So, come on kids .and adults too! We re ready and waiting at the library. We want to see you this summer!!!!!!!

PS: Visit our website for a complete listing of programs, and be prepared to see fliers coming home from presentations at the schools.
