Reluctant Goodbye to Youth Service Librarian
posted 06/10/2009
In his short time at the library Jim organized the teen writing contest, the bookmark contest, and hired two Teen Library Assistants. He lead kids around the new Born learning Trail and offered a newborn storytime just for dads followed by one just for moms. He visited all the preschools and many classrooms and did our regular weekly programming. He revamped the children's collection creating a biography section, combining the nonfiction sections, expanding the picture books, pulling out the series, and buying a lot of new titles. He arranged the children's and teen summer reading programs. With a lot of help from Kathy Babbitt and a few teens they lined up performers, organized other programs (think henna and duct tape wallets), rustled up prizes and books, made reading logs, put together reading lists, and stuffed bags. He's talked to classes and done everything to make this one of our best summer reading programs ever. And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few other things he managed to squeeze in for the kids. I will begin a search hoping to get someone started by the beginning of the school year in the fall. Kathy Babbitt will step in and help us for the summer making sure our summer reading and regular youth programming continue as planned. Jim's last day will be June 20th. We are sorry to see you go.
