Changing Spaces

posted 06/26/2009
The only constant is change is one of the many quotes that express what many of us feel all the time. I hear Library volunteers and patrons say it in one way or another pretty regularly as we move things around or change a procedure. We hope the change we implement is for the better and improves service and the patron experience, and it usually is.

This week we saw the first stage of a rearrangement of our front area of the library. We have been working on a way to make programming easier to set-up and create a better space for patrons. Every time we have a program in front of the fireplace, we have to push the extremely heavy audio carts out of the area. Although the carts are designed to move, I don't think they were designed to be moved as frequently as we do or on carpet. Moving these adds considerable stress and time to each program we have, and we have a lot of programs. We have also been looking to create a warm and welcoming space for our programs and for relaxing and reading in the library. The fireplace and the few chairs set the stage for this, but we want to do even better.

Over the next couple of weeks expect to see this change taking place. We will install custom shelves and move collections and computers around a bit. The Local and Northwest collection shelves that were installed this week will give you a glimpse of what is to come. I am very excited to see it come together!

As a result of this we are auctioning through sealed bid the metal display shelving that currently hold the adult audio cassette and CD collection. Bids are due by 6:00 pm on Friday July 10th. The carts can be taken apart and mounted on a wall with either the straight shelving or zigzag shelves. We hope a retailer can find a use for these displays. Please let me know if you have any questions about these units!

Be sure to stop by the Library and see what we're up to!
