San Juan County collects a second 2 percent hotel/motel tax to be used for promotion. The first $350,000 of the tax receipts is being used by the San Juan Island Visitors Bureau. Tuesday, December 13, the county Commissioners awarded a contract for tax receipts over $350,000 to the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will split the money equally with the Lopez and Orcas Island Chambers of Commerce. The funds will be used to support the promotional and operational efforts of the Visitors Centers, as needed, to include such deliverables as increased hours of operation, responding to and providing services to visitors, web page design and event related marketing.
The county solicited requests for proposals for use of the funds. The SJIVB, Westcott Bay Art Institute and the chamber submitted proposals. The Lodging Tax Advisory committee recommended the county award the contract to the SJIVB. After a discussion, Dec. 6, the commissioners allowed each group to submit an additional one page of material clarifying the "deliverables."
After a discussion on Dec. 13, Commissioners Kevin Ranker and Bob Myhr voted to award the estimated $15,000 contract to the San Juan Island Chamber. Commissioner Alan Lichter voted against the motion.
