DEADLINE FOR AUCTION BIDS FOR SAN JUAN ISLAND LIBRARY SURPLUS ITEMS Written bids are due to the library by 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9.
The San Juan Island Library is auctioning surplus library materials, including computer equipment and plantings. Two laptop computers and six desktop computers, routers and printers are available as well as some of the rose bushes that formerly lined the street. Forms are available at the library or may be downloaded from the library www.sjlib.org.
Bids will be opened at the regularly scheduled Library Trustee meeting on Tuesday May 13th at 6:30 PM after which the Library will contact successful bidders. The list of bidders will be public. Successful bidders must pay for and arrange for pickup of materials by Wednesday, May 30.

In 1966 the department acquired its first new engine. Engine 1 was put into service in 1966 and after 41 years of service the engine is destined for a new task. The volunteer association has recently taken responsibility for the engine and is raising funds for an educational display at the historical museum. Bring family & friends and enjoy a traditional breakfast, and help preserve a little bit of Orcas history! Kids under 3 are free; Adults $8; Seniors and Kids (3-12) $5.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FRIDAY HARBOR LABS OPEN HOUSE. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 620 University Road, Friday Harbor. Self-guided tours. This event offers a splendid opportunity to meet scientists and students at the Labs and check out the research and teaching facilities. Scientists and students will showcase their marine science research, answer questions and provide demonstrations. There will be posters, marine plants and animals, microscopes, plankton sampling and observations, and activities for visitors of all ages. FHL Director Ken Sebens will be available to talk about FHL programs and research, and his own research program. Kids are particularly encouraged to attend.
The public is invited to learn more about the equipment used by scientists to learn more about marine zoology, botany, fisheries and oceanography. People can step aboard and tour our 58’ research vessel, the R/V Centennial, and check out its remotely operated vehicle (ROV), oceanographic tools, and high-tech sonar systems. There will be several lectures between 1 and 3 p.m. given by FHL scientists. The titles of their lectures will be "Symbiosis-Interesting Interrelations Between Different Species", "Natural History of the Subtidal Zone" and "FHL History". There will also be a demonstration of SCUBA equipment and a SCUBA dive from the FHL dock.
Sturdy shoes are recommended because the tour route includes rough dock planks, gravel paths and trails. You can find free popcorn in the tradition of Friday Harbor Laboratories’ Open Houses, and light refreshments will be available in the Dining Hall for a small fee.

BLUFF and PRAIRIE WILDFLOWER WALK 1 p.m. American Camp.
Join Island naturalist Bob Lemon and botanist Louisa Nishitani to spot
wildflowers and explore the ecology of the American Camp prairie ecosystem
in a guided nature walk scheduled 1 p.m., Saturday, May 17. The walk is
free and meets in the American Camp visitor center parking area.
Lemon and Nishitani will guide visitors along the coastal bluff trail and
explain how drought and salt spray resistant plants survive and thrive in a
strenuous environment. Enjoy the spring wildflowers from Grandma’s Cove to
South Beach, including seacoast lupine, chocolate lilies, camas and more.
A marine biologist, Lemon has lived most of his life in the Pacific
Northwest and has been leading Native Plant Society field trips for several
years. Nishitani has a master’s degree in Botany and is a long-time member
of the Friday Harbor chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society. She is
working on a project to identify the flowering plants along the trails on
the maps created by the San Juan Island Trails Committee

At 10 p.m., the high school field will be lit up with luminaria to honor survivors, friends that have died, those who are still in treatment. One member of a team of eight or more walk the high school track to fight cancer. The event concludes at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
