7th ANNUAL SALMON CLASSIC INVITATIONAL at Roche Harbor Marina & Resort.

Second Arthur Whiteley Lecture: IT's NOT JUST TARZAN STUFF 7 p.m. UW Friday Harbor Labs

Nalini Nadkarni, co founder of the International Canopy Network, will be the guest speaker at the second Arthur Whiteley Lecture offered to the public by San Juan Nature Institute in collaboration with UW Friday Harbor Labs. At 7 p.m. on Thursday February 4, we expect The Commons at the Labs to be filled to hear this scientist talk about her work in the canopy of Rainforests in Washington and Cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

At the beginning of her graduate studies, forest canopy studies were dismissed by some as 'just Tarzan stuff', but in the past two decades, canopy research has revealed an extraordinary world of plants and animals that live solely in the canopy even building soil in crooks of branches. Nalini reaches her research site using rope climbing techniques. Her research includes work on mosses that are restricted to this airy environment and the interplay of forest animals with this epiphytic flora. She is concerned about the unsustainable harvesting of local mosses and engaged prison inmates in experiments in moss farming to redress the loss.

Nalini believes in interdisciplinary studies and having created a canopy walk on the Evergreen Campus invited artists and musicians to visit the canopy, Inuit people, who have no word for trees, to come and experience the forest upper story, and the blind to experience the sounds and wind currents that move through the canopy.

This dynamic communicator uses every tool at her disposal to publicize the importance of trees and forests in our lives even creating Treetop Barbie, and Ground Support Ken, to engage children in discussions about forest ecology.

San Juan Nature Institute is proud to offer our local audience the opportunity to hear Nalini speak and invite the public to attend. There is no charge, though donations would be gratefully received.

Visit our website www.sjnature.org for information about the 2010 Arthur Whiteley Series.

Marine Science Lecture Series: TRACKER DOGS: SAVING KILLER WHALES 7 p.m. at Camp Orkila Marine Science Center on Orcas Island. We all can picture tracker dogs saving earthquake victims in Haiti, but saving killer whales? Get real! Katherine Ayres, a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Washington's Center for Conservation Biology will explain how and why she is using tracker dogs to save endangered southern resident killer whales.

Ayres uses whale scat to measure the health of individual whales and to ultimately assess the health of the overall population. But finding whale poop in the wild is not easy. That's were a trained scat detection dog can be a big help. Just like tracker dogs that can be trained to detect live people under rubble or cocaine packed inside of a can of gasoline; they too can be trained to detect killer whale feces floating on the water at great distances. Ayers will talk about how detection dogs are being used and what valuable information can be gained from the scat, which unlike blubber biopsies, is collected without impacting already endangered animals.

The Marine Science Lecture Series was created to inspire the general public and to highlight the amazing fish and wildlife of our region. Lectures are free. Please park in the upper parking lot at Camp Orkila. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the talk is available before and after the lecture.

The 2009/10 Marine Science Lecture Series is presented by program partners The SeaDoc Society and YMCA Camp Orkila. It is made possible through generous sponsorship by Tom Averna (Deer Harbor Charters), and The Gould Family Foundation and co-sponsorship by Barbara Brown, Eclipse Charters, The Kingfish Inn, Shearwater Sea Kayak Tours, West Sound Marina and Jim and Kathy Youngren.

The SeaDoc Society is a non-profit program of the Wildlife Health Center, a center of excellence at the world-renowned UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. For more information: Jean Spalti * SeaDoc Society * 360-376-3910

HOW THE WRITERS and ARTISTS OF THE "LOST GENERATION IGNITED THE 20th CENTURY 6:30 p.m. San Juan Island Library, free. Inquiring Mind lecturer Janee Baugher discusses how post-war 1920s Paris played host to America's "lost generation." American writers who felt disillusioned and culturally bereft in their native country chose to escape growing U.S. conservatism by relocating abroad. The lecture will explore this community of international thinkers that included James Joyce and Pablo Picasso, American novelists F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein, poets T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. The relationships formed in this artistic hub launched careers and artistic work that defied past conventions, resulting in the birth of such artistic movements as Dadaism and Surrealism.

IOSA's HAZWOPER SAFETY TRAINING from 1 to 5:45 pm. on Saturday, Feb. 13 on Lopez Island We've timed the class so that people from other islands can walk on the mid-day ferry, get a ride to and from the class and get back home in the early evening.
