Marie Greenfield’s 90-plus years living on San Juan Island inspired her great-granddaughter to pen the winning theme in the Fourth of July Celebration theme contest. Courtney Clark, a Friday Harbor Elementary School second-grader, chose "Growing up on the Island – Past, Present and Future."

"It’s a great idea. It’ll be fun, too," said Kathy Johnson, San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce president.

Johnson presented Courtney with $100 on May 5. Courtney will also ride with the Fourth of July Parade Marshal.

Courtney, the daughter of Jeff and Darlene Clark, visits her Great-grandma once a week. They play King’s Corner, Go Fish and other card games. They look at photos and Marie tells Courtney about island life of yesteryears.

Below is Courtney’s unedited theme:

I CHOSE MY THEME FOR THE JULY 4, 2000 CELEBRATION BECAUSE:

I love history and culture.

I have a 93 yr. old great grandma who has lived in Friday Harbor since she was a young girl. She has told me many storys about growing up on the island.

My moms family grew up here too. I enjoy looking at family pictures in the past.

Boy, things sure have changed. Some of the things that have changed are the jobs, work and play time, sports, toys, and the way people got treated.

I wonder what people will be like when I’m 93.
