$70K raised at Friday night fundraiser for Banry family
Deanna asked all of the volunteers who organized the event to come forward as she thanked the community. posted 12/10/2007 Two of Gordy and Deanna Banry's four children battle the genetic disorder Mucolipidosis (ML) Type III. It changes the instructions that direct the way our bodies grow and develop. Recently they have suffered a permanent severe loss of mobility due to their deteriorating health and require the use of scooters and wheelchairs. The Banrys current home is not designed for these devices, so the boys must be carried or crawl. Islanders are raising funds so the Banrys can move into a more suitable home. Deanna Banry had many people in tears as she thanked the community. She said, "One time when things were overwhelming me, Sheriff Bill Cumming told me, 'You may have given birth to these boys but they belong to the community'." Gordy Banry said, "We love you guys, thanks for being here tonight." For many people the event was a welcome reminder of what the islands are all about - islanders helping islanders. If you'd like to make a donation, the Family Resource Center is accepting donations and managing a fund for this family assistance project. Checks can be made out to:
Be sure your contribution includes the "The Banry Fund" in the memo space. The Family Resource Center is a 501© 3 non-profit, so your contributions are 100 percent tax deductible.

Banry Family needs Islanders' help securing more appropriate housing
posted 10/29/2007 Many of the complications require symptomatic management that includes surgical procedures. Both boys have experienced several surgeries and continue to develop complications from this disease. They have recently had a permanent severe loss of mobility. This has caused an inability to complete simple tasks of daily living without severe pain and loss of function. They are increasingly unable to walk without assistance and require the use of scooters and wheelchairs at home and in school to make simple movements. Within their home they must be carried or else they have to crawl on their stomachs in order to go from room to room. This has diminished the quality of life for the entire family. The Banry family lives on Beaverton Valley Road outside of town. Their home is a two-story, 100-year-old farm house on an extremely small parcel. Contractors have found that it will not be possible to accommodate the boys needs by remodeling or expanding the house. Gordy and Deanna are active contributors to the fabric of our community, serving as wrestling coaches, mentors and childrens' advocates. Deanna has volunteered as Purple and Gold President, the League Representative for the Friday Harbor Athletic Association and currently serves as an Emergency Medical Technician with San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services. The boys have brought a needed perspective to our community in many ways. Their lives and their hope have taught our youth and adults many important life lessons. Now it is time for us as a community to help them. We are asking you, our island friends and family to help the Banrys move into a home that will meet their needs. They require a home that will allow the boys to move about freely using wheelchairs, receive medical care, and be structurally safe. The Banry family is willing to sell their home and use the limited equity as partial payment on a new home. However, this will not cover the cost and remodeling expenses. They cannot afford an increase in their mortgage payment that would be needed to make up the difference. The SJI Family Resource Center has generously offered to accept donations and manage a fund for this valuable family assistance project. Checks can be made out to the SJI Family Resource Center and sent to P.O. Box 1981, Friday Harbor , WA 98250. Be sure your contribution includes the "The Banry Fund" in the memo space. The Family Resource Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, so your contributions are 100 percent tax deductible. Time is of the essence. A fundraiser is also being organized for Friday, December 7 at the Fairgrounds Main Building. There will be dinner, dancing and an auction. We will let you know more soon! If you can help or have any suggestions please contact helpinghands@banryfamily.com. You can also reach Cady Chapman Davies at 360-378-5152 extension 0 or Weyshawn Koons 360-378-3676.
