Franco wins half-marathonStory by Matt Pranger posted 06/09/03
Brisbois, 39 years old, completed the long route in two hours, 49 minutes, 53 seconds. He felt at home running San Juan's up-and-down terrain. "It was an excellent course," Brisbois said. "Normally runners love these hills. I was on my own turf." Mullen, 23, also is used to running hills -- she graduates later this week from the University of Washington -- but running a 26-mile race is a new experience. "This is my first. I've run a lot of half-marathons…. I had no idea how I'd do," Mullen said. Her time was 3:23:35
Franco, who ran the 1600- and 3200-meter runs for the Friday Harbor track team this spring, won the half-marathon in 1:23:22 -- nearly five minutes quicker than the runner-up. "I was really surprised. I couldn't see anybody behind me," the 17-year-old said. "I had a reserve tank I didn't know about." Howard, 35, finished in 1:31:05, just behind third-place finisher Matt Hovelman of Orcas Island. Howard attempted to stay just ahead of Hovelman. "I try to find some young, cute, fit guy (to keep pace with). It usually increases my time," Howard said. She enjoyed the San Juans "beautiful" scenery. "It was a stress-free course," Howard said.
Ross Lockwood of San Island was the first islander to finish the full marathon. He was fourth in 3:19:30. "That's a shock," Lockwood said after learning his place. "I was running to finish. This was my first marathon. I'm quite pleased." Lockwood ran a half-marathon in Seattle six months ago and decided to try a full marathon. "I thought, if I'm going to run a marathon, it might as well be in my hometown. "The course volunteers were great…. I look forward to seeing how the event goes next year," Lockwood said.
Jane Hutchison, 41, was the first island woman to complete the long course. She was the 10th female, finishing in 4:03:07. "I knew once I made it past Bailer Hill I'd be OK," Hutchison said of the course's longest downhill. "It wasn't as bad as I thought but I did expect False Bay to be easier." The runners -- 245 entered the race -- were pleased the record heat that scorched the islands for three days prior to the race gave way to more seasonal temperatures. Fog rolled off the water and hills at the start of the race and the sun didn't break through until most of the runners crossed the finish line at the San Juan County Fairgrounds. "On the coast it felt really nice, the breeze coming off the water," Mullen said. "It was perfect weather. That fog was so refreshing," Franco said. | ||
