San Juan County 2007 Relay For Life drew more than 20 teams who spent the night at the Friday Harbor High School track. The Soroptimist Team raised the most money - $9,054 - , the Lutheran Church and Friends team was second with $5,435.37. Third was the Dreamers team with $4,300.

First among individual fundraisers was Widget Webert (pictured) with $4,210. Susie Lefever was second with $1,910 and Lori Stokes was third with $1,230. Donations and pledges will be accepted until August 31.

The American Cancer Society Relay For LifeŽ is about celebration, remembrance, and hope. Participants honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight it.

Team Chevalier raised funds by selling butterflies which were released at the beginning of the event. Photos are posted here The first lap of the relay was for cancer survivors. Other relayers lined the track and cheered them on as they completed their lap.

Next the teams took to the track. From 4 to 6 p.m. children participated in a mini-relay put together by Katie Fyrquist, a Friday Harbor High School student. Theme laps kept interest and spirits up.

After dark, the most moving ceremony took place, Elisa Howard read a list of those lost to cancer. The track was outlined with luminararias - decorated bags lit with candles. Each bag bore the name of a person who was battling cancer, had conquered the disease or who had died from the disease.
