As the winners names were called out, they came up and selected a prize from a variety of items donated by merchants. Prizes ranged from a propane barbecue grill - selected by Ingram - to overnight stays at the Quarryman suites at Roche Harbor to loads of gravel to hair makeovers to 25 gallons of gasoline. Everyone went home with a prize. After all the successful fishers chose a prize, the rest of the names were drawn out of a bag and the people came up and chose a prize. Tim Judkins kept things moving along. He reminisced about the changes in the event in the past 23 years. Roche Harbor has taken over the cooking of the salmon dinner which is a vast improvement over drunk fisherman trying to light a fire, he said. He reminded everyone of how the event started. Einar Nielsen was out fishing and was later found in his boat dead of a heart attack. Lying next to him was a 54-pound salmon. The event was put together as a way to remember Einar and to raise funds for scholarships. Last year $23,000 in scholarships were given out. Next year the derby will be Oct. 2, 3, 4 and 5, 2008. |
Niel Tarte was not in the top ten but was thrilled with his five-pound fish.
Denny Swirtz won third place with his 23.6 oz salmon. | |
