Flagpole dedicated in honor of Ross Miner

posted 11/11/03
As B.J. Miner rode down Spring Street in the Fourth of July Parade this summer, she noticed flagpoles here and there, but not at the Medical Center. She said, "That's it, I'm going to do it." Today, Veterans Day 2003, a flagpole and flag were dedicated to her late husband Ross R. Miner, Col. U.S.M.C.

Miner's grandsons, Tobi and Casey Lehman, raised the flag as Kathleen Wilson sang the national anthem and the American Legion Honor Guard stood at attention.

Hospital District Board Chair George Johnson said, "Ross would be proud, it is an appropriate tribute."

Inter Island Medical Center Director Deb Wiggs said, "We're grateful for the role B.J and her husband played in making this facility available for all of us." Wiggs also thanked the veterans for their sacrifices.

Ross served in the U.S. Marine Corps from January 1942 until July 1971, and who was a member of the San Juan Island community for many years.

Miner thanked the Lions who helped clear the area where the flagpole was installed. Billy Ray found the perfect rock for the plaque after he overheard B.J. telling someone what she was looking for.
