Pediatrician active in community

posted 04/04/05
Dr. Mark Fishaut has a part-time work schedule and a full-time commitment to the community. After practicing medicine for thirty years in Buffalo, New York, the pediatrician moved to San Juan Island last year and joined San Juan Healthcare Associates. While children and families have benefitted from his advice, soccer players have benefitted too.

Friday Harbor Girls Soccer Coach Doug McCutchen was looking for help with the team, when someone told him about the new pediatrician in town. "With over twenty years experience Mark has a tremendous depth of experience with coaching women's soccer," McCutchen said. "He has a passion for the sport and for contributing to kid's lives." Besides coaching the high school team, Fishaut also works with the U-14 girls team. "The community is very lucky to have such an experienced person in our midst willing to give his time and expertise," McCutchen said. "I think the kids enjoyed getting to know Mark and developed an instant respect of him."

One of the players, Friday Harbor High School senior Shay Hopkins was selected as a forward on the All-State Girls Soccer second team last fall. This is the first time a soccer player from Friday Harbor ever received that honor. Hopkins appreciated the help Fishaut gave the team. "He was very, very helpful," she said. "He brought a new perspective and was really beneficial to our team."

Nurse Practitioner Sue Hill and Dr. Burke Gossom of San Juan Healthcare Associates are just as appreciative of Dr. Fishaut. "We're delighted to have Mark," Gossom said. "He brings a level of specialty expertise that helps us be better as well."

Fishaut received his medical degree from University of California San Diego and completed his training at Yale/New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and the University of Colorado Medical Center. He worked on research regarding infectious diseases and taught at a medical school before opening his own practice in 1980.

His position at San Juan Healthcare is a "nice niche" he said. He has presented several classes/workshops for parents since arriving on the island and has given presentations to the EMTs. "They were a very receptive audience," he said. He plans to offer more workshops in the fall.

Educating young people about taking care of their health is important to him. He would like to involve high school students in reviving the October breast cancer walk. The walk was held for a few years, but didn't take place last year.

Fishaut and his wife Sharon have been busy settling into their new home on the island. The couple met when he happened to check into a bed and breakfast she ran in Oregon. They married in 2002. They each have two grown children from previous marriages. The couple should fit right into island life. They have at least two of the prerequisites - a love of gardening and two large dogs.

Fishaut enjoys working and living in a small community. "It's nice to see people in the store. We're enjoying life here," he said. "We're here to stay."

Dr. Fishaut works at San Juan Healthcare on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For more information or to make an appointment call 378.1338.
