Grandparents and Relatives Raising Grandchildren support group starting Nov. 10

posted 11/08/05
If you are a grandparent raising a grandchild - or a relative raising a younger relative, this support group is for you. While most grandparents, aunts or uncles plan to spend time with their grandchildren/nieces/nephews, few expect to parent them. Did your whole life change when you took on this unexpected role?

You had not really planned to spend this time in your life providing 24-7 care to a young one…but this is where you find yourself. The joys are great, but the hours are long and sometimes the going gets tough. Did you know that you are not alone? There is a growing number of you on San Juan Island. Let's get together, talk about it, and support one another.

The San Juan Island Family Resource Center is sponsoring a support group for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and other Relatives Raising Younger Relatives. It will be facilitated by Janna Gingras, MSW. The first meeting will be held on Thursday evening, November 10th from 6:30 - 8 p.m. It will be held at the Family Resource Center, 476 Market Street (across the street from Market Place, next door to the food bank).

Any grandparent raising a grandchild or relative raising a younger relative is invited to participate in this group. Call Joyce at 378-5246 to reserve your place right now, ask questions, or make further inquiries.
