NECROPSY STORY:

UW FH Labs annual open house May 16

The annual chance to tour University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Scientists and students will showcase their marine science research, answer questions and provide demonstrations. There will be posters, marine plants and animals, microscopes, plankton sampling and observations, and activities for visitors of all ages. Kids are particularly encouraged to attend.

Find out more about the equipment used by scientists to learn more about marine zoology, botany, fisheries and oceanography. Step aboard and tour the 58’ research vessel, the R/V Centennial, and check out its remotely operated vehicle (ROV), oceanographic tools, and high-tech sonar systems.

Several lectures by FHL scientists and a demonstration of SCUBA equipment and a SCUBA dive from the FHL dock are also included in the day's activities.

. Sturdy shoes are recommended because the tour route includes rough dock planks, gravel paths and trails.

You can find free popcorn in the tradition of Friday Harbor Laboratories’ Open Houses, and light refreshments will be available in the Dining Hall for a small fee.

Climbing aboard the Centennial, catching plankton, watching a scuba diver via an underwater camera, and touching a very slimy sea star were just a few of the activities available at the 2007 University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs Open House last Saturday. More than 700 people attended the event.

The Lab is located just outside the Town of Friday Harbor.

The labs attract students and researchers from around the world.
By an informal count they have come from 62 countries.

In addition to the lab-related work, there was also other group's exhibits on display, such as Beachwatchers and the Marine Resource Committee.

A timeline showed the schools history.

Hands-on exhibits were popular.

The slimy sea star protects itself by producing an abundance of mucous.

The fish print table was busy all day. The fish were painted and then pressed onto paper.

Two students demonstrated scuba diving. A camera enabled the crowd to see the divers underwater.

Nets were used to scoop up plankton which could then be looked at under the microscope.

The research vessel Centennial was open for tours.
