UW FH Labs annual open house May 16The annual chance to tour University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Scientists and students will showcase their marine science research, answer questions and provide demonstrations. There will be posters, marine plants and animals, microscopes, plankton sampling and observations, and activities for visitors of all ages. Kids are particularly encouraged to attend. Find out more about the equipment used by scientists to learn more about marine zoology, botany, fisheries and oceanography. Step aboard and tour the 58’ research vessel, the R/V Centennial, and check out its remotely operated vehicle (ROV), oceanographic tools, and high-tech sonar systems. Several lectures by FHL scientists and a demonstration of SCUBA equipment and a SCUBA dive from the FHL dock are also included in the day's activities. . Sturdy shoes are recommended because the tour route includes rough dock planks, gravel paths and trails. You can find free popcorn in the tradition of Friday Harbor Laboratories’ Open Houses, and light refreshments will be available in the Dining Hall for a small fee. The Lab is located just outside the Town of Friday Harbor.
The labs attract students and researchers from around the world.
In addition to the lab-related work, there was also other group's exhibits on display, such as Beachwatchers and the Marine Resource Committee.
