Battery D is a reenacting group based on San Juan Island who reenact the period of the Pig War, 1859-1872. Appearing at several occasions each year such as encampments at San Juan Island National Historical Park and local parades and celebrations, members turn up in period uniforms and clothing to bring the period back to life. Members portray individuals from Battery D, 3rd Artillery and Company D, 9th Infantry as well as British Royal Marines and civilians. Battery D is a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax exempt organization. Membership in Battery D is open to all. There are a number of uniforms available to loan from the National Park Service to those who would like to see what reenacting is all about. Eventually most members purchase their own uniforms and camp equipment and are able to chose a specific character to bring back to life. Women take a very active role in our events portraying the hardy and elegant ladies of the time. In addition to soldiers of the period, we also can use musicians, metal workers and a whole host of people doing interesting activities. |

Donations to Battery D are tax deductible. We currently are seeking donations of cast iron, granite ware and other period cooking utensils for our mobile kitchen. This is a chance to let that old pot or pan live a new life serving as a focal point to history. Contacts: Chris DeStaffany or Oren Combs. Email: sanjuanbrewing@rockisland.com |

If you would like to find out what all this is about and if it might be for you, contact any member and they will be glad to fill you in on what's going on. A military reenacting group honoring two great nations who settled their differences without firing a shot. Battery D has a complete period mobile kitchen that is able to prepare large numbers of "old fashioned" meals. Wood stoves, cast iron and white tents abound at our event sites as the wholesome aromas of a by gone era fill the air. Battery D volunteers certainly eat well. |
