During and after. Homes for Islanders (HFI) is a private, non-profit corporation funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (through Rural Development.) The mission of the corporation is to assist limited income families interested in building their own homes. The first step in the process is for HFI to purchase land for the building sites and then develop the infrastructure necessary (water, septic, etc.) The lots are then ready for sale to qualified individuals. Qualified individuals must meet certain criteria. The criteria includes income limitations, good credit history, stable employment and the desire and commitment to work 35 hours per week in a building group with seven to ten other qualified families. HFI also assists in procuring USDA 502 Rural Housing Loans from Rural Development. |
