Friday Harbor Middle School's team of eighth-graders almost pulled off an upset at last night's (Feb. 7) 8th Annual Knowledge Bowl. But despite sharing the lead through three of the four rounds with the junior/senior team and being the only team to know which country invented french fries (Belgium) they ended up in third place. The Soroptimist team's knowledge of famous women gave them the edge in the final round.

Six teams competed in the annual fundraiser for the San Juan Public Schools Foundation. Ralph Hahn presided over the friendly competition. He showed no favorism despite an offer to be crowned prom king by the Kiwanis team.

A variety of island fashion was on display. The Lions were elegant in their black tie attire. The Kiwanis team emulated classic and modern high school dress. Hahn gave Leo Michael advice on wearing baggy pants. "Just don't move fast," he said.

Questions covered geography, current events and literature. A sports question Whose record did Babe Ruth break when he hit his home run? didn't stump the Lions because Hahn said, Howard Schonberger was there. Ribbing the eighty-year-old newspaper man has become a tradition at this event. The answer was Babe Ruth.

The dreaded words - A train is traveling at - met with groans from the audience and the teams. The question -- How long will it take a train, one mile long, traveling at 60 miles per hour, to pass entirely through a tunnel ten miles long? A majority of the teams answered correctedly with 11 minutes.

Scores were tallied at the end of each round. When the final scores were announced. The eighth-grade team whipped out a You are the weakest link sign complete with an arrow pointing to the last-place finishers, the ninth/tenth grade team.

The event was sponsored by:

  • Rock Island Communications
  • Roger and Claudia Salquist
  • San Juan Island Grange

Team sponsors were:

  • Islanders Bank
  • Schuman Excavating
  • American Legion
  • Kiwanis
  • San Juan Lions Club
  • Soroptomist
  • Pacific Northwest Bank

Since its inception in 1993, the foundation has given out $60,000 in grants. The group's mission is to enhance and supplement the educational activities of Friday Harbor public schools using private sector funding to help creat excellence in education. Past grants include funding for the World Language Lab at the high school, the Airwatch Weather Station at the middle school and the school farm project at the elementary school.
