San Juan Breast Cancer Support Group Meets

Changes in cancer support group

posted12/14/04
The Cancer Support Group is being reconfigured under the guidance of Wilma Munsey, San Juan County Cancer Support Group Coordinator. The group will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Mullis Center. Each meeting includes a presentation by a guest speaker on a topic related to cancer support.

The group will cover a variety of topics, possibly including:

  • genealogy of cancer in our individual families,

  • demographics of cancer in this county,

  • exercise following cancer surgery,

  • lymphatic massage.

The meetings will begin with a presentation by the guest speaker, followed by committee reports. Socializing will take place after the meeting officially closes at 2. p.m.

Upcoming speakers:

  • December 16 speaker: Elaine Kendall on relevance of Susan G. Komen grant to our members.

  • January 20, 2005 speaker: Vicky Thalacker, Flying Eagles, transporting cancer patients to therapy off-island.

  • February 17 speaker: Christi Beckley, American cancer Society, programs especially for those with cancer experiences.

The Mullis Center bus will meet the interisland ferry if advised a day ahead of time of Cancer Support attendance from other islands.

Lunch is offered by the Mullis Center for $3.00 and reservations with Sue Brennan (378-6407) will help the Center in their shopping and menu planning.

This group is limited to female attendance, however Wilma (upon request - 378-5196) will help organize a men's group, led by a male retiree, for similar cancer support.
