Marine Resource Committee 10th Anniversary celebration Jan. 28
posted 1/23/2006
All of us in the San Juan Islands share an appreciation for the wonder and beauty of our marine waters and the complex web of life they support. People in these islands are more aware of their connection to the natural world than most, and also are more willing to do what’s necessary to protect it. The Marine Resources Committee was created by forward looking citizens who realized the necessity of a forum where people with diverse points of view could work together to promote a common vision of marine stewardship.
In the ensuing 10 years the MRC has become the county’s focal point for protection and restoration of rockfish, forage fish, eelgrass, salmon, and whales, to name a few. Many volunteers throughout the islands are making a difference, working on projects that were conceived and nurtured in MRC meetings. Today all of San Juan County is a Marine Stewardship Area, as proclaimed two years ago by a Board of County Commissioners resolution in January 2004.
On Saturday, January 28, we will celebrate the Marine Stewardship Area and 10-year anniversary of the Marine Resources Committee and rededicate ourselves to the responsibility of taking care of this unique and precious marine ecosystem. We invite one and all to join us from 1-4 PM at the Friday Harbor Middle School.
