A hard landing by Washington State Ferry Elwha at the Lopez Island terminal stopped ferry service to the island for several hours Easter Sunday, April 16, 2016. Damage to a wingwall had to be inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard before the dock could be reopened. The ferry Elwha was taken out of service. The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. The Lopez terminal was reopened around 3 p.m. Full service was restored to the San Juan Islands route by 7:35 p.m. when the Samish replaced the Elwha.
