UPDATE: SJI School Board position 1: Two votes separate 2nd and 3rd place

Ruth McKenna slipped past Heather Christensen in the race for Position 1 on the San Juan Island School Board after more primary ballots were counted Wednesday, August 2, McKenna has 304, and Christensen has 302. There were four candidates vying for the top two places. The top two vote getters go on to the general election. Sarah Werling-Sandwith finished first with 748.

The count at the end of the day Tuesday was: Werling-Sandwith finished first with 637 votes, in second place was Heather Christensen with 266 votes. In third place was Ruth McKenna with 251. In fourth place was Neil Curtis with 178. 

In the race for Position 2, Barbara Bevens received 673 votes. She will face T J Heller who garnered 441. J Alphonsine Haslet-Phillips came in third with 139.

It was a low turnout for the August 1, 2017 primary election - only 22 percent or 1,368 of the 6,222 ballots sent out had been received back at the San Juan County Elections Office by mid-day August 1.
