Feb. 6: County council talking about vacation rental regs, Sharpes Corner construction, grants and whales

San Juan County Council will hear a presentation by WSDOT Planning & Engineering Services Manager Todd Carlson about the plans for construction of a round-about at Sharpes Corner in Skagit County this spring and summer at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018 in the legislative building at 55 Second Street in Friday Harbor.

WSDOT has warned islanders that the construction plans will impact ferry traffic. A presentation to the community is set from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Brickworks in Friday Harbor. 

Also on the Council's meeting agenda are discussions of new regulations for vacation rentals. The biggest change since previous discussions icnclude penalities for operation of unpermitted vacation rentals and

M. A vacation rental shall not operate or be advertised without a vacation rental permit. Evidence of operation includes advertising, online calendars showing availability, guest testimony, online reviews, rental agreements or receipts.

County Prosecutor Randy Gaylord is advising changes to the text to clarify that vacation rentals are not allowed in detached accessory dwelling units permitted on or after June 29, 2007.

The discussion is the second item in the 9:15 a.m. time slot. 

Following the vacation rental discussion, the annual report on grants will be presented followed by an update on Orca Protection.
