San Juan County Sheriff Deputy Jeff Asher sustained a wound to his forearm after being hit by bullet fragments during an "active shooter" training session last month. The bullet ricocheted after hitting a steel target. He took care of the wound with a bandaid during the practice, and went to Peace Island Medical Center afterwards.
According to one source, Asher was referred to an orthopedic surgeon because the fragments were embedded between the bones.
The day before Asher's injury, Reserve Deputy Doug Harmon was nicked in the face by a bullet fragment.
After Asher's injury, the training session was aborted. Sheriff Ron Krebs said his staff is investigating the incidents. According to the Sheriff, an investigation by an outside agency is not required.
