The time has come, SR 20 Sharpes Corner improvements start Monday

Work on #Sharpes Corner includes improvements in the entire area, starting by building a roundabout at the top X then working down (north). Crews from Tapani will start work at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018 at SR 20 and Miller Gibralter roads (the top X). This is a half a mile south of the SR 20 and SR 20 Spur intersection a.k.a. Sharpes Corner. Crews will build this roundabout then move north to Sharpes Corner.

WSDOT has posted a video that walks you through the general timeline for construction between now and July. (The video is also posted at the bottom of this page.)

The timeline could change slightly as crews get going. Updates will be posted on WSDOT North’s Twitter account.

Delays will depend on:

Current stage of construction.

Time of day.

What other drivers choose to do.

Andrea Petrich of WSDOT says, occasionally, equipment may need to move in or out of the area, which will increase waits. Peak periods are generally weekdays 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the bulk of commutes coming in the middle of those times. Drivers will wait longer during those hours and - as those who live in the area know - Friday afternoon traffic starts earlier than 3 p.m. I’ll update you here each week about what drivers (including me) are experiencing but know that every day could be a little different. If you have time sensitive meetings or appointments, give yourself more time than you think you’ll need and bring a book or plan a special coffee stop if you get through more quickly.

Drivers can help themselves and others by changing their routine. If possible, consider:

Working remotely.

Altering your schedule to avoid peak periods.

Joining a vanpool through Island or Skagit transit.

Biking across the Tommy Thompson Trail.

Taking public transit.

Signing up your children for the school bus.

Carpooling.
