$15K available to help prevent homelessness

San Juan County Council has $15,000 in its Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA).  The program helps low-income people who are in immediate need of rental assistance to avoid eviction or to facilitate a move to new housing. The county Housing Bank Commission (HBC) is recommending the funds be split into thirds and given to the three Family Resource Centers on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands.

The amount in this fund has varied throughout the years and has in the past come from a variety of sources including, the United Way, FEMA, the Opportunity Council, private donations and county funds. In 2013 the fund was $33,000, in 2016 it was zero. During the budgeting process for 2017, the council designated $15,000 for Emergency Rental Assistance from the 1961 Affordable Housing Fund.

The council will vote on the recommendation at its Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
