All residential and commercial burning permits in San Juan County have expired. No more burning is allowed until the season reopens in the fall. The fire risk level is moderate. Campfires will continue to be allowed in contained fire pits no larger than 2’ by 2’ in size, burning fire wood only, not yard waste.
A temporary restraining order was issued June 11, stopping work on a portion of the Tucker Avenue reconstruction project. A hearing will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 22 at San Juan County Superior Court to decide if an injunction will be issued. The TRO was ordered by Judge Stewart Andrew, sitting in for Superior Court Judge Kathryn Loring who was disqualified from hearing the complaint filed by Carla Higginson, owner of 580 Perry Place.

Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) training operations are scheduled to occur at Ault Field June 20 and 22, 2018. People living in local communities should remain aware that the aforementioned operations are not the only operations out of NAS Whidbey Island, particularly at Ault Field, which is a 24-hour-a-day operational facility. There are many other training evolutions that people may hear. However, the aircraft carrier flight training operations are types of operations that involve lower altitude flight training in close vicinity to the airfield.
Ten graduating seniors from Friday Harbor High School and two graduating seniors from Spring Street International School were awarded new scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year from two different funds held at the San Juan Island Community Foundation. Previous recipients of the following scholarships have also been awarded one year renewals.

Sharpes Corner roundabout construction update from WSDOT's Andrea Petrich: Work in Anacortes continues. I think I need to clarify what’s happening at Sharpes Corner. Last Friday crews from Tapani were able to open part of the Sharpes Corner roundabout – but the work is not done. I repeat: This roundabout project area is still a work zone.
San Juan County Health and Community Services is partnering again with Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor, Orcas Island Community Foundation, and the Honeywell Foundation, to offer Market Bucks at Farmers Markets on Orcas and San Juan Islands.
The Town of Friday Harbor has contracted with Mike Carlson Enterprises to reconstruct Web Street and portions of A and Nichols Street. The Contractor is mobilizing equipment on Wednesday, June 13. This project will include utility upgrades, road resurfacing, and the addition of continuous sidewalks. Plans and specifications are available at Town Hall for review.
Friday Harbor Physiotherapy & Wellness, the island’s new manual therapy, personal training, and health coaching provider, is celebrating its inception with an open house from 11 am to 4 pm. Saturday, June 16. It will be held at their natural movement gym and wellness studio at 156 Moonlight Drive off of Bailor Hill Road. All are welcome.
