Nancy Hieronymus April 2, 1926 - January 7, 2017

Nancy Hieronymus passed away peacefully in her home on San Juan Island, January 7, 2017, having been attended to by family members and a team of wonderful care professionals.

She was born Nancy Hayden Abbott, daughter of Howard Abbott and Frances Hayden, on April 2, 1926 in San Francisco, California. She and her brother Anthony later lived in Norwalk, Connecticut. Dreaming of becoming an actress, she moved to Manhattan, New York, where she married Leonard Gordon. They had two children, Sally and Christopher, before moving to Los Angeles in January, 1956, where their third child Stuart was born. In 1964 she and Leonard divorced, and in 1966, she married Richard Hieronymus. On April 3, 2016, she celebrated 50 happy and harmonious years of marriage to her devoted and loving husband.

Nancy loved creatures of the earth, sea and sky, and the Pacific Ocean where she swam like a fish and enjoyed sailing. One of her most fulfilling periods, when she lived in Ventura, California before moving to San Juan Island in 1988, was working as a volunteer at the Channel Islands National Park Visitors Center.

Nancy will be remembered by her family and friends for her kindness, thoughtfulness, warmth, sweetness, and lively sense of humor. Up until her final illness, she loved to read, and during her lifetime she painted, made ceramics and played the piano. Artistic and cultivated, she relished travelling, concerts, plays and museum exhibits.

Most of all, Nancy loved living in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, where she danced with the foxes who had become tame enough to come up to her door bringing their babies to show her, where she enjoyed watching whales and feeding the birds and raccoons, and where deer promenaded across the field in front of her windows. She dearly loved her friends on the island who gave her much happiness.

Surviving Nancy is her husband, Richard Hieronymus; her brother Anthony Abbott, his wife Susan and their children David, Andy and Steve and their families; her children, Sally Gordon-Mark, Christopher Gordon, Stuart Gordon and his wife Cherie; her half-siblings Martha Blake, William Abbott, Liz Hagn and Mary Milchikier; her stepdaughters, Gail Heinsohn and Susan Broadhurst; her grandchildren, Tony Mark and Ashley Gordon; her great granddaughter, Justine Mark; her cousins Ralph Hayden, his wife Jeannie and son Ralph Jr., Margaret Grace and her daughters Hayden Fidler and Chelsea Grace, and Robert Hayden and his wife Shoko; her sister-in-law Sharon Keim and her children, John Keim, Elizabeth Keim and Kathy Staller.
