Mary Dee Duma was born Oct. 9, 1948 in Anacortes, WA to Arnold and Betty Sandwith Guard; the youngest of their five children. She was raised on the family farm in Beaverton Valley on San Juan Island; the fifth generation of the Guards to live there. Mary attended the Friday Harbor schools, graduating with the class of 1966.
While living in Seattle, she met and later married Donald Duma whom was from Wilton, ND. They were wed in St. Francis Church in Friday Harbor on March 11, 1967. Don and Mary raised three beautiful daughters; Kristy Kay, Tammy Lynn, and Teresa Marie in Alderwood Manor, WA.
For many years Mary worked as a bookkeeper, for Olson’s Foods and later for Valmart in Friday Harbor. Mary enjoyed Gardening, Sewing, Knitting, and most of all playing BINGO. Mary was a kind and gentle person. She deeply loved her family and friends.
Mary passed away from Cancer on June 24, 2017 at the age of 68. She proceeded by her husband, Don; her parents; two brothers, James (Jim) and Richard (Dick); and sister-in- law, Merna. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands; Brad Villers, Dan Peringer, and Clint Wrzesinski; her grandchildren, Christine, Shannon and Nickolaus Villers, Gina Peringer, Brea, Keiton, and Hailee Wrzesinski; Great Grandchildren, Charlie and James Villers; Tristan, and Luna Peringer; brother Bob Guard; Sister Joy Potter; Sisters- in-law Dee Forge, and Diann Schulz; Brothers-in-law Gerri Potter, and David Duma. Mary cherished her enduring, lifelong friendship with Melanie Rouleau Williams and her husband Larry. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Valley Church- San Juan Island on August 12th at 2:00pm.
