James Edward Browne Jr. passed away on March 27, 2018 surrounded by his daughters in Arlington, Texas. Jim was born on May 28, 1937 to James and Inez (Mattson) Browne in Seattle, Washington and raised San Juan Island.
He grew up working the family business, now known as Browne’s Home Center. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Washington and then entered the Marine Corps, where he earned the rank of Lance Corporal. He returned to the island after he was discharged. He worked in the family business and during the summers he would commercial fish in Alaska and at home until the mid-1970s. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, serving as the Grand Master in 1967. After leaving San Juan he eventually settled in Texas and started a long-haul trucking company, Air Ride Transport. He sold the business in 2007 and to keep busy he started delivering trucks. He delivered his last one the day before he was admitted to the hospital.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, and brothers Ricky and Robert (Robbie).
He is survived by his brother Terry (Jan), sister-in-law Claudia (Rob), daughters Debbie (Hogan) Rishel, Candy (Gil) Fryer and Penny (Stuart) Dunn, his grandchildren Gabby and Landon Rishel, Chloe and Brittany Fryer and Andrew and Willy Dunn, nephews Ryan and Justin Browne.
There will be a celebration of life for Jim at Downrigger’s at 2-4 p.m. June 2, 2018. Please bring any pictures and memories you would like to share. For those of us who were lucky enough to spend any time with him know he had a lot of stories, lots and lots of stories.
