Prowlers target nine vehicles last night

San Juan County Sheriff's Office has received reports that at least nine vehicles were prowled  between 1:30 and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 21 on San Juan Island. People are advised to lock their vehicles and to not leave valuables in plain sight.

County-wide burn ban effective August 21

A county-wide burn ban is in effect as of 1 noon Tuesday, August 21, 2018 for the San Juan Islands. Elevated temperatures for extended periods and the lack of precipitation has created a high fire danger in San Juan County, and across the region.

Update on J50: More injections planned - antibiotic and dewormer

Response teams spent about three hours on Saturday, August 18, 2018 monitoring J50, the ailing three-year-old member of the Southern Resident Killer Whale population, as J Pod returned to the Salish Sea on the way towards San Juan Island.

August 21: Free lecture at TWM: The Salish Sea Marine Survival Project

Iris Kemp, an ecologist at Long Live the Kings, a Seattle-based nonprofit that works to restore wild salmon and steelhead populations and to support sustainable fishing, will present a lecture, The Salish Sea Marine Survival Project, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 21 at The Whale Museum. She earned her master’s degree in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington, where she studied the distribution and feeding habits of juvenile salmon in Puget Sound.
