Music, fun and games at 2015 Pig War Picnic

The Kiwanis Club hosted yet another spirited Pig War Picnic on the grounds of the San Juan Historical Museum. Attendees visited the new Museum of History and Industry, ate pulled Pork sandwiches and hotdogs, enjoyed the music and particpated in old-style games. The three-legged race, gunny-sack race, pennies hidden in straw, donut-hole eating contest and an egg toss provided plenty of competition.

2015 Friday Harbor 4th of July Parade winners announced

Crowds turned out on a hot sunny day for the 2015 Fourth of July parade in Friday Harbor. After a short delay watching the ferry traffic drive by, the traditional parade headed down Spring Street. The parade had plenty of music with the UW Husky Marching Band, Friday Harbor Community Marching Band, the Highlanders Bag Pipers, the Rockers, and the Jazz Band. Jerry Alhadeff, owner of the Palace Theatre which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, was the grand marshal.

The "Hooray for Hollywood" theme was well portrayed in the variety of floats. The winners are:

Samish ferry inaugural run June 14, 2015

The new Olympic Class ferry, Samish, began service in the San Juan Islands Sunday, June 14, 2015. San Juan Island Fire Department fire boat Sentinel escorted the 144-car ferry into Friday Harbor where it was met by elected officials, a jazz band and community members.

State Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson, state Senator Kevin Ranker, San Juan County Council member Bob Jarman and Town of Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher made welcoming remarks. The San Juan Jazz Quintet provided the music.

Girls Tennis: Friday Harbor High School home match

A late-running ferry meant Sedro Woolley High School Girls Tennis team had only enough time for an eight-game pro set format match with Friday Harbor High Friday, May 1, 2015. The Cubs beat the Wolverines 3-2.  The Wolverines # 1 and #2 singles won their matches. Isabel Gabriel, filling in as Friday Harbor's #2 singles, fought back after dropping the first few games.
