Islanders remember Hazel Lawson
posted 04/25/04
She regularly ate breakfast and lunch at the diner and was well known for her cheerful outlook and her stories. Kevin said she never held a grudge, except for one. He invited Fred Sundstrom to explain. | |

Sundstrom recalled going to school with Hazel. "We had double benches. She'd be reading, real studious. I'd give her a bump and she'd slide off the bench. She said 'Why do you keep doing that?' I said, I don't get to hold your hand until I help you get up off the floor," he said. Hazel's daughter, Gwen Wilson shared a story. One day when they were young, Hazel and her sisters went down to the beach with their fishing poles. They caught a seal. They weren't sure what to do, so they carried it up the hill, took it home and put it in the bathtub. "It didn't turn out so good," Gwen said. Hazel played the harmonica for birthdays. Joyce Gaylard told the crowd about Hazel's birthday last year. She couldn't figure out why she couldn't cut her cake - until she realized it was made out of styrofoam. A real cake was brought out after the joke. Everyone agreed Hazel will be missed and that she would have enjoyed the gathering.
