Marcia Lee ZakarisonJanuary 28, 1957 - March 5, 2007
Marcia Lee Zakarison, 50, a fourteen-year resident of Friday Harbor, Washington, died Monday, March 5, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, WA. She was born on January 28, 1957 in Pullman, WA to Russell and Elaine Zakarison. Marcia grew up on a farm near Pullman. In 1979, she graduated, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and English. While at Southern Cal, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Motor Board of USC. Marcia then completed her postgraduate studies at Washington State University from 1979-1981. In 1985 she graduated from the University of Washington’s School of Medicine with honors. Marcia completed her Residency at Family Medicine Spokane from 1985-1988. In 1987 she received the Mead Johnson Award for Graduate Education in Family Practice and in 1990 received the Outstanding Faculty Award at Family Medicine Spokane. From 1991-1993, Marcia was a family physician at Pullman Family Medicine, a Locum Tenens physician for Dr. James Patterson in Friday Harbor from 1994 -1999, a family physician for Island Health NW La Conner Medical Center from 1993 to 2000, and a family physician for Inter Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor from 2001 to the present. In 1999, Marcia received the Group Health Cooperative Award of Excellence. She was affiliated with the American Academy of Family Physicians, Washington Academy of Family Physicians, and the Washington State Medical Association. Her volunteer work and community service included: Board of Directors, USC-YWCA, President, Vice President, Member 1975-1979; National Chairwoman of the Student YWCA 1977-1979; National Board of the YWCA of USA, member and student Vice President, 1977-1979; World Council of YWCA’s, United States Representative, 1979-1982; Advisory Board of WSU-YWCA, President, 1989-1993; providing health education programs and special academic instruction to Friday Harbor Elementary School from 1996 to the present, and Director of the San Juan County EMS. Marcia’s professional interests included specializations in women’s medicine, pediatrics, and adolescent and geriatric medicine. She was known for her integrative approach toward her practice. Her compassionate and personal manner made her respected and loved by her patients. Personally, she was an accomplished classical and folk guitarist, with undergraduate musical training in classical guitar. Marcia had a great love of literature, particularly poetry. She enjoyed volunteering in the public schools. In the midst of her demanding professional career, her first priority was always her family. Marcia is survived by her husband, Tom Schultz; daughters, Alaina and Emily Schultz; brother, Eric Zakarison; and sisters, Elizabeth Hall and Kristine Zakarison. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2007 at the Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Nancy Tiederman officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Private family interment was held at Valley Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Doctors Without Borders. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and San Juan Islands.
