Olivia K. Hamelin
Olivia K. Hamelin passed from this life on December 22, 2007. She had lived in Friday Harbor for the past four years. Olivia was born in Tacoma, Washington and lived there until her marriage to Carl Hamelin in 1942. She then followed her husband as the army took him to California and Texas and they eventually settled in Bellingham, Washington where they raised their family. As her children grew up, Olivia was able to explore her many interests and became a life-long learner, continually taking classes in everything from history and religion to art and gemology. She studied sumi art for several years in Bellingham and practiced yoga, tai chi, and healthy cooking, long before they became popular. Olivia eventually learned to love travel as well. She cranked up her nerve and traveled bravely to many countries of the world and particularly fell in love with Mexico and its people. She made many, many trips to her favorite land of sun, margueritas, music and handsome men! Olivia loved her family and she loved having a good time. She always kept a vast reserve of kindness and empathy for man and beast and we never heard her say no to an adventure. She will be dearly missed by her son, Bill Hamelin of Bellingham; her daughter, Mary Karen Ryan (Cal Ryan) of Friday Harbor; grandsons, Tyler Ryan (Bobby Ryan) of Boulder and Brady Ryan of Seattle; and her dear friend Terry Forsyth, as well as her many friends in Whatcom County. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl. Her family is particularly grateful to the wonderful staff at Islands Convalescent Center who cared for her with great kindness during her last months of life. |
