Patricia Jeanne MaddenFebruary 24, 1929 – March 5, 2008
Patricia Jeanne Madden died peacefully at her home in Friday Harbor on March 5, 2008 from a battle with lymphoma. She has left our world but she will never leave our hearts. Her late husband James Madden, a member of the Guard/Madden pioneer family, precedes her in death. Pat was born in Seattle on February 24, 1929 to Alice Marie and Harold MacPherson. She grew up in Tacoma where she graduated from Stadium High School and where she was also crowned a Daffodil Princess. She attended the College of Puget Sound. On a ski trip to Mount Baker, she met an island boy by the name of Jim Madden. They married and made their first home in Kailua, Hawaii raising their first three children, Susan, Loree, and Jim. After eight years in Hawaii, Jim longed to be close to his family on San Juan Island and moved his family from Hawaii to Tsawwassen, B.C. There, they had their fourth child, John. Pat spent these years as a devoted mother to her four children, tending to their every need: as a chauffeur, as a chef, and as a devoted and compassionate mother. She gave her life to her children during these years, and loved every minute. After her children were raised, Jim retired and they decided to make Friday Harbor their permanent home. Pat’s love of reading made volunteering at the library one of her favorite activities. She also loved spending time at the San Juan Historical Museum and on Saturdays, at the Farmers’ Market. She was often seen playing golf throughout the year with her best friend Janet Swanson and Wendy Shepard. Her children believed that her love of the game was inherited. Her father, Harold MacPherson, walked the course at Meadow Park Golf and Country Club until he was 90 and her grandmother played golf at St. Andrews in Scotland (where she became deaf when hit by a golf ball). Pat was a beloved mother to Susan Madden, Friday Harbor, Loree [John] Cunningham, Campbell River, B.C., Jim [Annette] Madden, Pt. Roberts, WA. , John [Sandra] Madden, Abu Dhabi. She was a loving and proud Grandmother to Kelsey and Justin Cunningham and will be fondly remembered by Kendra (Annette’s daughter). She leaves behind her adoring brother, Gary [Cecilia] MacPherson of Gig Harbor and her sister-in-laws, Molly Madden of Friday Harbor, Katherine Madden Anderson of Tacoma and many nieces and nephews, which includes her nephew, Geoff Prentiss of Friday Harbor. She also leaves behind her faithful canine companion and best friend, Maddie and her feline tag-a-longs Guard and George. Pat was an inspiration to all the lives she touched. Her sense of humor, compassion and wisdom was admired and treasured by many. Her presence was like a ray of sunshine. She lived her life in a proud, private and exemplary manner, which has served as a role model for her children, grandchildren and friends. We will miss her so very much and our hearts will ache, but we will take comfort in remembering her infectious laugh, her genuine smile and her immeasurable kindness and love. A memorial service will be held at the Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 1:30pm with a celebration of her life after the service at the San Juan Golf and Country Club. Father Heffernan will hold a private family memorial and prayer at the Saint Francis Cemetery immediately following the service. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Pat’s memory to the following: We will miss you Mum! |
