Over the span of the week all age groups received a general fire safety discussion. Then each grade level was given an extra bit of age appropriate training. These included a lesson on stop, drop, and roll (first performed by the Dalmatian); a live connection to real 911 operators; practice escape drills in a (theatrical) smoke filled bedroom; and the oldest students used the lid of a pot to smother a real fire on a cook top or were trained in how to use fire extinguishers to put out a real fire. "You can talk about it all you want," said one firefighter, "but there is nothing like hands-on to teach the kids what to do in a real emergency." The fire safety training is an annual occurrence at the elementary school that is looked forward to by the students and the firefighters. Many of the firefighters took time off work to volunteer for this assignment with the children.
